A capsule wardrobe is a set of roughly 25-40 clothing items (excluding underwear, socks, and workout gear) where every top works with every bottom. The result: fewer decisions in the morning, less laundry, and a closet that is half empty without feeling like you have nothing to wear. Based on analysis of the Project 333 method (Courtney Carver, 2010) adapted for 2026 clothing categories.
| Category | Quantity | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Tops (shirts, blouses, sweaters) | 10 | 3 t-shirts, 3 button-downs, 2 sweaters, 2 blouses |
| Bottoms (pants, jeans, skirts) | 5 | 2 jeans, 1 trouser, 1 skirt, 1 shorts |
| Dresses / jumpsuits | 3 | 1 casual, 1 work, 1 going-out |
| Outerwear (jackets, blazers) | 4 | 1 rain jacket, 1 leather jacket, 1 blazer, 1 warm coat (winter) |
| Shoes | 5 | 1 sneaker, 1 boot, 1 flat, 1 sandal, 1 dress shoe |

Not counted: underwear, socks, workout clothes (3 sets), sleepwear (2 sets), and specialty gear (ski jacket, formal gown, wedding suit—these stay in seasonal storage).
| Metric | Before | After Capsule |

| Total clothing items (excluding underwear/socks/workout) | ~120 (US average, per Fashion Institute of Technology data) | 33 |
| Items worn in the last 30 days | ~30 (only 25% of wardrobe is regularly used) | 33 (100% usage) |
| Closet rod space occupied | Full — 6+ linear feet | ~2.5 linear feet |
| Laundry cycles per week | 2-3 loads | 1-2 loads |
| Morning decision time | 7-10 minutes | 2-3 minutes |
The off-season capsule lives in IRIS Weathertight 44-Qt bins ($15 each)—one bin per person per season. The airtight seal protects clothing from dust, humidity, and pests during 6 months of storage. Add CedarSafe Cedar Blocks ($18 for 16 blocks—2 per bin) as natural moth protection. Store bins on the top shelf of a closet or in the garage. When seasons change, swap the bin contents with the active closet—20 minutes, no decisions, done.
